At that point of time, we had predicted, Portions of her forthcoming film, the much-discussed CHOKHER BALI, directed by Rituparno Ghosh, were screened exclusively for this writer and the feeling one is left with at the conclusion of the screening is of utmost contentment. This writer was amongst the first to gauge the potential of the film, when he witnessed portions of the film a few months ago. The story revolves around four protagonists - Mahendra, his friend Behari, Mahendra's wife Ashalata and Ashalata's widowed friend Binodini. It is a psychological study of relationships between the sexes in a well-to-do family, of shifting eternal triangles, complex motivations, subtle play of emotions. Based on Rabindranath Tagore's novel of the same name, CHOKHER BALI is set in the pre-independence era, in the early 20th century Bengal. 35,44,469 from 15 cinema halls, despite tough opposition from BAGHBAN, KHEL and another Bengali film, GURU. The rest of the tale centres around the play’s main character, a prince who flees his fate and finds himself on a fascist island, where he incites the women to rise against their commander. The writer becomes so engrossed in the play that the boundaries between reality and imagination begin to blur.
He chooses to write his own adapted screenplay of the play after failing to find a single theater show. The plot revolves around a cynical playwright who is looking for performances of Tagore’s famed play Tasher Desh in Kolkata. It is a fantasy film that is regarded an off-kilter rendition of Rabindranath Tagore’s eponymous drama.
